E-Scooter Rider Hit By Shuttle Van at LAX

Q: I was riding an e-scooter and hit by a Shuttle van at LAX. What are my rights?

A: If you were hit by a bus, shuttle, car, or any type of vehicle while riding an e-scooter at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), depending on how the accident happened, you may have a claim against the driver of the vehicle which collided with you.

LAX rules and regulations specifically prohibit riding an e-scooter on airports roadways and sidewalks within the terminal loop. However, LAX workers commonly use electric scooters to get to and from their cars because it is much faster than waiting for a shuttle.

Riding an electric scooter at LAX can be dangerous because the traffic around the horseshoe-shaped road at LAX is usually chaotic. There is often significant congestion and construction happening. Drivers are rushing, distracted, and looking for passengers, a terminal, or signs. Vehicle drivers are not scanning for small, low-profile vehicles like electric scooters. All of this creates a recipe for disaster for e-scooter riders.

If you or a loved one was hit by a car, shuttle or bus while riding an e-scooter at LAX, the resulting injuries can be very serious, or even deadly. The fact that e-scooter riding is prohibited at LAX does not mean you don’t have a claim. It just means that it may be a “comparative negligence” situation, i.e., some percentage of fault for the accident may be attributed to the scooter rider. The degree of fault depends on the facts of the accident.
